The bord and pillar method of mining is suited to work flat coal seams of average thickness and at shallow depths. Coal seams of 1.8 to 3 m thickness are best suited for this method, though the method has been successful in thinner seams also down to a thickness of 1.2 m and in thicker seams up to 4.8 m in thickness.
The meaning of BORD-AND-PILLAR is of or relating to a system of coal mining in which tunnels are driven in a checkerboard pattern having massive square pillars between them which are gradually cut away as the work proceeds.

Numerical modelling for shortwall mining of developed bord and pillar workings was conducted using FLAC 3D software [4] with the tested and calibrated rock mass properties. This model study was undertaken with a face length equivalent to four pillars (84 m) and five pillars (104 m) wide, along with variation in depth and hard cover, …
This study is mainly focused to predict a critical strata movement value for safety of the bord and pillar method of mining, perticularly depillaring. Similar content …
Bord and Pillar method of mining is one of the oldest methods. The key to the successful Bord and Pillar mining is selecting the optimum pillar size. If the pillars are too small the mine will ...
Abstract. This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep …
Bord and Pillar method of mining is one of the oldest methods. 3. INTRODUCTION In India, about 98% of underground output of coal is obtained by Bord and Pillar method and barely about 2% by longwall methods. The other countries where Bord and Pillar method predominates are Australia, The USA and South Africa. The …
In the longwall mining method, mine development is carried out in such a manner that large blocks of coal, usually 100 to 300 metres wide and 1,000 to 3,000 metres long, are available for complete extraction (see photograph).A block of coal is extracted in slices, the dimensions of which are fixed by the height of coal extracted, the width of the longwall …
• Bord and pillar (1.8 m–2.2 m stope widths using low-profile (LP) mechanized equipment) • Breast mining (1.3 m stope width using extra-low profile (XLP) mechanized equipment) A graphical representation of the bord and pillar and mechanized breast mining methods is shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. It is important to note that the ...
The developed strength equation can be used to design stable pillar layouts provided the factor of safety is greater than 1.8 and the width-to-height ratio of the pillars is greater than. 0.8. The paper concludes with guidelines for applying the developed equation and selecting appropriate input parameters.

The paper points out that bord-and-pillar mining is the most important method of coal extraction in South African underground coal mines, and advocates that pillar design procedures should be ...
Mining in this panel was undertaken with two, three or some-times four passes of a roadheader cutting overlapping sections of approximately 2.44 m.With this information it is believed unlikely the original pillar heights are less than 4.3 m or greater than 7.9 m, and so the fitted normal distribution is truncated at 4.0 m and 9.0 m.The …
Bord-and-pillar mining was then compared to conven-tional mining according to the following: financial analysis, dilution and flexibility. Conclusions could now be drawn to the appropriateness of bord-and-pillar mining in Vlakpoort and Moddergat. mining and its development correlate closely with cultural progress. Mining processes involve prospecting for ore bodies, analysis of the profit potential of a proposed mine, extraction of the desired materials. One of such methods is the Bord and Pillar method of mining. Bord and Pillar method of mining is one of the oldest methods of mining.

8.3.1: Room and Pillar Method. Room and pillar mining is arguably the most important underground mining method in practice today. The majority of underground production comes from room and pillar mines, and the majority of underground mines, by number, employs the room and pillar method! Think about that! Let's start out by looking at this ...

1. Introduction to Depillaring: After pillars have been formed on the bord and pillar system, consideration has to be given to the extraction of coal from the pillars; the operation is known as pillar extraction. It is also referred to as depillaring, pillar-cutting or broken working. ADVERTISEMENTS:
